Rice is indigenous to the humid area of tropics, sub-tropics and temperate regions. Rice is grown in all continents (except Antartica), mainly in warmer areas. Rice is characterized as a semi aquatic crop. Rice is characterized as a semi-aquatic crop, although some varieties have adopted to grow well in dryland conditions. The total water requirement of rice is 1200mm.Rice has a wide physiological adaptability and rice cultivations extends from sea level to high altitudes up to 1000 feet above sea level. A hot and humid climate with a temperature range of 21 to 35 degree Celsius is required for its growth. There are many varieties of rice which are cultivated with differential response to climate factors, such as temperatures, rainfall and day length. The duration of growth varies from 80 to 200 days. But a majority of the commercial varieties require an average of 120 - 150 days of growing period.
Rice is cultivated in more than 100 countries. During 2003-04, the total world production in 386.6 Million MT. The world production increased to 401.8 Million MT in year 2004-05 (USDA Projections). It is mainly produced in Asian countries (90%). China, the largest producer accounts for 29% of world production followed by India with 22.34%. Together these two countries accounted about half of world production. Indonesia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand and Myanmar are the other major rice producing states. |
